Gorgeous tiny house oasis built for paradise

This tiny home on Hawaii’s Big Island is influenced by its lush surroundings, and it’s easy to see why. Built among vibrant trees and plants, the blue cottage was designed to embrace natural light and temperate weather.
Ellie and Dan Madsen, the sister-brother duo behind the aptly named Paradise Tiny Homes, built the 260-square-foot tiny home as to look bigger than it actually is, thanks to a series of clever design moves.
Paradise Tiny Homes
In the living room and kitchen, the ceiling stretches into a lofty pitched roof, while a curved roof over the lofted bedroom creates extra space.
Windows are designed to bring in maximum light. Two half-moon windows and a clerestory window shower light into the front of the house. The sides of the living room also feature two large sliding windows, while a series of smaller openings help brighten up the staircase and bedroom loft.
But the home’s coolest amenity has to be the operable windows in the kitchen, one side of which opens up to the deck ...

Keys to Selling Your House Virtually

In a recent survey by realtor.com, people thinking about selling their homes indicated they’re generally willing to allow their agent and some potential buyers inside if done under the right conditions. They’re less comfortable, however, hosting an open house. This is understandable, given the health concerns associated with social contact these days. The question is, if you need to sell your house now, what virtual practices should you use to make sure you, your family, and potential buyers stay safe in the process?
In today’s rapidly changing market, it’s more important than ever to make sure you have a digital game plan and an effective online marketing strategy when selling your house. One of the ways your agent can help with this is to make sure your listing photos and virtual tours stand out from the crowd, truly giving buyers a detailed and thorough view of your home.
So, if you’re ready to move forward, virtual practices may help you win big when you’re ready to sell. While abi ...

How to fight climate change at home

While a global pandemic may have put life (as we know it) on hold—and cleared the air temporarily amid widespread lockdowns—it hasn’t exactly stopped the looming climate crisis at large.
As we celebrate the 50th anniversary of Earth Day today in a social-distanced world, it’s still possible to make a difference in the fight against climate change with individual actions that start at home.
From rethinking your laundry routine to ditching the plastic trash bag, these 17 ideas not only provide a roadmap for a healthier and more sustainable household, but can also save you some money, too. Let’s get to it.
1. Grow your own food. In addition to helping you eat more fruits and veggies, growing your own food cuts down on transportation energy costs and avoids the pesticides and synthetic fertilizers used in conventionally grown crops. You can start a traditional vegetable garden outside, opt for an indoor garden kit, or even start small by regrowing vegetable scraps—like scallions, lettuce ...

Will This Economic Crisis Have a V, U, or L-Shaped Recovery?

Many American businesses have been put on hold as the country deals with the worst pandemic in over one hundred years. As the states are deciding on the best strategy to slowly and safely reopen, the big question is: how long will it take the economy to fully recover?
Let’s look at the possibilities. Here are the three types of recoveries that follow most economic slowdowns (the definitions are from the financial glossary at Market Business News):

V-shaped recovery: an economic period in which the economy experiences a sharp decline. However, it is also a brief period of decline. There is a clear bottom (called a trough by economists) which does not last long. Then there is a strong recovery.
U-shaped recovery: when the decline is more gradual, i.e., less severe. The recovery that follows starts off moderately and then picks up speed. The recovery could last 12-24 months.
L-shaped recovery: a steep economic decline followed by a long period with no growth. When an economy is in an L- ...

New prefab home designs channel gorgeous, moody Scandinavian style

Koto, the U.K. studio behind sleek prefab houses, cabins, and playhouses, is now collaborating with California-based prefab powerhouse, Plant Prefab, on two new home designs. The studio’s Piha and Yksi concepts will soon join Plant Prefab’s sustainability-focused LivingHomes line.
Piha, which starts from $612,000 for the module (and from $830,400 for all hard costs), is a full-on house whose 2,184 square feet bend into an L-shape. The timber-clad design features four bedrooms, three bathrooms, two courtyards, and a deck designed for outdoor gatherings. The charred timber facade is interrupted by big stretches of windows that slide open to connect the inside of the house to the landscape, while the bedrooms are located in a separate wing of the house for maximum privacy.
